Gjersrud-Stensrud is an area in the south east suburbs of Oslo. It is considered to be the last undeveloped area within the city borders. Even though the area has been marked as a development zone in the area-plan of Oslo since the 1950s, it has been left as a blank spot on the map in spite of substantial urban expansion in the Oslo region. Throughout the years Gjersrud-Stensrud has been the arena of unrealized projects, utopian ideas and experiments. The new-town that never happened. An open field on the border of the city, yet in between satellite cities, each characterized by their contemporary suburban ideals. While planners and developers have believed that a public transit solution would be the single thing that would trigger the development of Gjersrud-Stensrud, the suburban ideals have somehow shifted. The suburbs of low density housing, contact with nature and child-friendly communities have been challenged by an increasing demand for sustainable planning favoring nodal developments at public transit hubs. The evolution of suburbs have always been closely linked to improvements in transportations systems. Now planners and developers are looking at new modes of transportation and AV-technology as a solution that could help finally materalize Gjersrud-Stensrud. The public transit department, Ruter, and the countrys largest housing developer, Obos, are now ready to start planning for a new city based on self-driving buses and public transit. If AV-technology is a solution for a sustainable satellite city, it is likely that such a technology would force architects to completely rethink suburban development. If Gjersrud-Stensrud will miss out once again, is yet to see.
